4 Tips for Repairing a Roof After the Winter Season

It’s not uncommon for the roof to develop issues after being battered by snow, hail, and ice during the winter. The torrid impact of these weather elements can cause roof parts to cave in even if they’re well-maintained. If your roof ever develops issues during the winter season, it’s important that you do not panic, since there are a couple of tips you could adopt to locate roof problems and in repairing a roof. Below are four roof repair tips that could help keep your house warm and safe during winter.

Finding the Leak

Start looking at the area of your roof that can be traced uphill to the stains when you first discover discoloration on your walls or ceilings. Look for irregularities such as roof penetrations, missing shingles, or other anomalies. If you can access your attic, the staining and mold on the walls will help you find the leak. If you don’t have access to your attic, you should carefully check the roof from the outside. Winter roof repair can be difficult, so you might have to contact a professional that’s an expert at repairing a roof.

Check Your Siding

Sometimes, the source of a leak isn’t your roof at all. It’s critical to check for cracks and knotholes near your roof’s windows, corner boards, and siding. Caulk in these spots is prone to cracking and wearing down over time, enabling water to leak into your home. To avoid leaks, replace any broken caulk in these spots with high-quality fresh caulk.

Fixing Plumbing Vent Boots

Sometimes, roof leaks are caused by problems with roof appendages like plumbing vent boots. While inspecting your plumbing vent boot, look for cracks or broken seams in the plastic bases. Then look for damage to the rubber boot that surrounds the pipe. You’ll need to buy a new plumbing vent boot if these components are broken. Replace the nails at the base with rubber-washer screws if the boot is in excellent condition.

Remove Any Ice on Roof

Even if it isn’t snowing, you must be cautious of ice. Ice can be heavy, but it can also cause an ice dam, which can be deadly on any roof. Wet snow is much heavier than snow that is dry and fluffy. Six inches of wet snow equals around 38 inches of dry snow in weight. This can cause a backup of additional water on your roof, damaging your shingles and producing leaks. It’s critical that you clear any snow or ice from your roof. Since it is slippery, it’s preferable to get a pro to handle it for you to avoid any personal damage.
