How to Find Quality Roofing Contractors

Hiring a roofing company can be a daunting task. How do you know if they will come when they say they will? Or that the work will be done within budget and on time? There are many factors to consider as you try and find roofing contractors, but here are some of the most important ones.

Do Your Homework

Check reviews and find out what other customers have said about them in general, as well as recent jobs specifically. The best contractors often have customer testimonials on their website or social media pages (or both). These days it’s easy to find someone who is happy with their roofer; don’t settle for less than stellar just because it seems easier at first glance.

Ask Around

Get recommendations from friends, family members, and neighbors. Some of these people would generally be in the know, so their advice is worth considering when possible. Some roofing contractors work on word of mouth alone, in this case, you are probably looking at someone who owns a decent reputation and does quality work for reasonable prices.

Look for Multiple Certifications

If it’s available, check out if they have a Better Business Bureau of America (BBB) rating. You also want to find out how long they’ve been around as well as any complaints filed against them with the BBB.

The BBB offers more information on roofers, including average customer rating, which can give you an idea of how things are going for other customers in general. A low average rating is not always bad, but it might indicate problems that need more looking into either by talking directly with those who filed the report or checking out how many reports were filed overall. It’s also important to find roofing contractors that are bonded and insured.

Check References

Some roofing companies keep copies of old contracts handy. These can usually be found either on their website or by asking them directly. If they keep signed copies of contracts at hand, then you can at least check with the client to find out more about the details of services performed and if they are happy with what was done.

Consider the Roofing Contractor’s Specialty

Many contractors specialize in specific roofs such as clay tile, metal, asphalt shingle roofs, etc. You will want to find roofing contractors that offer the type of roofing material you are looking for.

Ask if They Offer Free Estimates

Give them a call and see if they will come out to provide you with the price of services to install, repair, reroof, or replace your roof. A fair roofing contractor should at least offer a free estimate. Be sure and confirm what is included in the estimate.

Ask About Their Warranty

How long does it last? Does it cover everything on your roof, such as not only defective materials but also any future damage caused by improper installation? Check if they repair or replace defective roofing materials or roof damage due to workmanship issues. If something goes wrong with your roof, you will want them to be willing to repair it right away. They should stand behind the work they do and fix anything that needs fixing.

Look into their business policies on added warranty or service work for free if needed due to specific reasons such as poor installation, shoddy materials used in roofing material choices, etc.

Consider Professionalism and Cleanliness

Do they keep the work site clean and reduce or eliminate any debris that may get left behind, such as nails, roofing tar paper, plastic sheeting, etc.? Are they on time for appointments? Can you reach them when needed by phone or email? Is it easy to get a hold of someone who knows what is going on regarding your project’s progress? If there are issues, do you feel like they will be resolved without much fuss?
